The Wilson 5000 is a base loaded antenna available will magnetic and roof top mounts. This antenna was designed for serious, high powered CB. The 2.5" diameter floating coil is constructed from 3/16" sliver plated copper wire. Silver is an even better conductor than copper. With the cost of silver, it isn't practical to have a solid sliver coil, though, so plating is the next best thing. The floating coil design protects of coil windings from freezing up in cold winter weather.
The size of the coil and thickness of the wire in the coil allow this antenna to withstand serious amounts of power. The Wilson 5000 is rated at 5000 watts on AM and an incredible 20,000 watts on SSB. Even if you are not putting out that kind of power (and most CBers aren't), the extra bulk on this antenna will improve your range and reception noticeably.
The antenna in these kits consists of a large coil (about 2.5" in diameter and 3" tall) with a ferrule on the top holding a 62" stainless steel whip in place with two set screws. The overall height is 5.5 feet. This design creates less drag than a fiberglass antenna, and stands up to damage from trees and other low clearance obstacles better. The antenna is tuned by adjusting the whip at the ferrule. The coil can be screwed off at the mount for easy storage or to get under a low clearance. A weather cap is included to protect the threads when the coil is removed.
The Wilson 5000 is available with a rooftop mount or a magnetic mount. The rooftop mount requires a 3/4' to 7/8" hole in a flat horizontal surface for mounting. This is typically on the roof of a vehicle, but can be on any flat horizontal metal surface on the vehicle. Typically, the higher you mount the antenna, the better your range will be. When installed, the mount body and cable are inside the vehicle for easy cable routing. The rubber gasket on the roof keeps the hole sealed.
The magnetic mount is simply placed on any metal surface. Again, placing it higher up is better for transmission and reception. The cable must be routed into the vehicle through the firewall, trunk lid, or window. It is a good idea to clean the mount and mounting surface throughly to prevent damage to the vehicle finish.
The Wilson 5000 includes a high quality, low loss 17 ' RG8X coax with a soldered PL259 already connected. Having the big PL259 already on the cable makes routing the cable a little more challenging, but the soldered connection is best for good connectivity. An additional PL259 is included with the antenna in case you need to cut the existing one off for installation.
